      HFC Connection

With so many different terms used for nbn® internet connections in Australia, it’s no wonder that people can get confused. From FTTP and FTTC to FTTN, FTTB, and HFC connections, the variety of connection types can be overwhelming to understand, especially if you’re someone who isn’t too familiar with the technology.

If you’re in the market for a new internet plan, we can help. Skymesh is the nbn® network’s leading specialised regional internet provider. We have award-winning plans that are designed to provide reliable internet access to regional areas.

If you’re keen to learn more about the HFC connection, then keep reading!

How does HFC compare with FTTP in terms of speed?

Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) technology provides direct access to the nbn® network through fibre-optic cables, so FTTP speeds are typically considered fast and reliable. This means that data is transmitted through a fibre optic cable all the way from the exchange or node to the user’s location.

On the other hand, Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) technology uses a combination of fibre optics and coaxial cables. The fibre optic cables are used for the main connection from the exchange to the area, while the coaxial cables are used to connect individual premises to the network.

While an nbn® HFC connection can be a pretty good option in areas where FTTP isn’t available yet, the quality can be affected by factors like the number of people on the network and the quality of the HFC cable.

Ultimately, whether you can use FTTP or HFC will depend on network availability. nbn® will allocate the ideal technology type based on factors like your location.

At Skymesh, customers can enjoy internet access via our Fixed Wireless, Sky Muster®, or Fixed Line internet plans, depending on their address and proximity to infrastructure. These plans come with varying data allocations and speed tiers, so you can choose one that best fits your internet usage needs.

For Fixed Line internet plans, including FTTP and HFC connections, customers can choose from three speed tiers:

      • nbn® 25. This tier generally has download speeds of up to 25 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 4 Mbps from 7.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. It supports up to two users and offers sufficient speeds for regular browsing.
      • nbn® 50. This tier generally has download speeds of up to 49 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 16 Mbps from 7.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. It can support up to three users, equipping them with a fast connection that can handle regular browsing tasks and low-data communications, as well as video streaming and file downloads.
      • nbn® 100. This tier generally has download speeds of up to 96 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 16 Mbps from 7.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. nbn® 100 can support around six users with very-fast speeds that could be used for more than regular web browsing. Examples would be watching HD videos on streaming platforms, playing games online, and completing work tasks at home.

If you’re unsure of which internet plan is best for you, our customer service team will be more than happy to help you make an informed decision.

Do I need a modem for HFC?

If you are connecting to the nbn® through HFC technology, you will need a modem or modem-router if you want to create a wireless network (Wi-Fi) at home.

A modem is needed to convert the data signal from the nbn® network to a format that can be used by your home devices, such as your computers, smartphones, and tablets. Your internet service provider (ISP) typically makes provisions for your own modem when you sign up for a fast nbn® HFC plan.

Now, it is technically possible to plug one Ethernet-compatible device directly into the nbn® connection box without a router. The thing is, most people want to use their internet connection on multiple devices in the home, particularly over Wi-Fi, which you’ll need a modem for.

With Skymesh, you can purchase an nbn®-compatible plug-n-play router alongside your internet plan for a one-time fee. You can even enjoy free shipping with your purchase!

Are nbn® HFC connections available in Australia?

Yes, an nbn® HFC connection is one that nbn® Australia uses to deliver high-speed broadband internet to homes and businesses.

However, not all areas in Australia have access to a Hybrid Fibre Coaxial connection. The availability of an nbn® HFC connection depends on your location and the nbn® rollout schedule in your area. You can check your address on the nbn® website or the Skymesh website to see which of the nbn® connection types are available in your area and make an informed decision from there.

With our transparent service details and various nbn® plans, we know that you get what you need, whether you’re looking for the fastest nbn® plan or cheap internet plans.
