      FTTN Speeds

If you’re reading this, then you’re probably wondering how fast FTTN speeds can go in your area and if an FTTN internet connection type is available in your location. Today’s digital age means more and more people are becoming familiar with the different ways we can access the internet. But that also means more people want answers to questions like, ‘Where can I find cheap internet plans?’ and ‘What is the difference between WiFi and internet?’

Here at Skymesh, we want to give you the information you need to become more technologically aware, so you can make the right decision when it comes to choosing among broadband internet providers.

Thanks to the creation of nbn® Australia, fibre connectivity – which is faster and more reliable than decades-old copper wires – achieved wider availability throughout the country and facilitated greater access to the internet.

However, the rollout of this broadband network is thanks to what is called a Multi-Technology Mix (MTM), composed of fixed line, fixed wireless, and next-generation satellite. MTM was a tactical move to make the most of already-existing network technology and connect more places to the closest fibre node.

Because not all areas are outfitted with a pure optical fibre line that runs all the way to their home, building, or street, these varying technologies give users access to the same nbn® infrastructure.

So, having said that, FTTN stands for ‘Fibre to the Node’. This refers to connections where the existing copper network and a fibre node are used to allow the nbn® network signal to travel over a fibre optic line to reach your premises.

Other types of fixed line connections include Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC), Fibre to the Building (FTTB), and Fibre to the Premises (FTTP). HFC connections are used when it’s possible to connect the final part of the nbn® network to the existing cable network.

FTTB is a connection type where a fibre optic line is connected to the fibre node in the building’s communications room. Then, the building’s existing technology is used to connect to individual homes, offices, or other spaces. Finally, FTTP refers to connections that link the nearest fibre node to the end user’s premises.

Now, let’s talk about FTTN speeds and how fast you can generally expect this connection type to be.

How fast are FTTN speeds in Australia?

To determine FTTN speeds, we can refer to a report prepared for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), which compared internet speeds of various connection types during busy hours (7.00 to 11.00 p.m., Monday to Friday).

On nbn® 50, FTTN speeds clocked in at 46.6 Mbps, while speeds of 87.3 Mbps were recorded on nbn100.

FTTN tends to rank lower than other fixed line connection types, especially that of an end-to-end fibre connection, as part of FTTN relies on copper wiring. Nonetheless, FTTN still provides faster and more reliable internet speeds compared to legacy technologies, depending on the distance from the node and the quality of the existing copper line.

It’s important to note that the results of this study are based on a particular time period only. Average FTTN speeds can still vary based on several factors, including the number of people in your home, weather conditions, and the like.

How much do FTTN connections cost monthly?

The cost of your internet connection is not based on the type of connection you have; rather, it is based on the kind of plan you avail of. nbn® offers different speed tiers for users to choose from, depending on the service available to them. The higher the Mbps, the more expensive your monthly rate.

A higher speed tier enables you to do more with your internet. Online gamers can enjoy lag-free sessions, video streaming aficionados can run their favourite streaming platforms on higher picture quality with ease, and downloading large files will take much less time than usual.

What’s more, a higher Mbps rate means more people in the household or building can share the same connection without having to endure slower speeds. This is ideal for those who run a business or share their home with family. If you’re a senior who uses the internet for light browsing or an empty nester, you should be able to get by with a basic speed tier.

It should be noted, however, that not all speed tiers are available everywhere. Location impacts the service you can get, so it’s unfortunately not a matter of preference. The availability of speed tiers depends on the type of technology you’re connected to and the speed tiers provided by your internet provider.

How do I check if FTTN is available in my location?

If you’re interested in choosing Skymesh as your retail service provider, reach out to us, and we will let you know which connection type is available at your premises. More connection types tend to be available in urban areas, but if you live in regional parts of Australia, we understand how difficult it can be to secure an internet connection you can count on.

For over fifteen years, we at Skymesh have helped regional Australians access a better internet connection.

With Skymesh, you can access unlimited internet with a Fixed Line connection such as FTTN (as well as FTTB, FTTC, and FTTP). There are three speed tiers available for Fixed Line connections: nbn® 25, nbn® 50 plans, and nbn® 100 plans. Respectively, these plans typically offer evening download speeds of up to 25, 49, and 96 Mbps.

The best part is that eligible users may be able to enjoy free standard installations.*

To see if Skymesh is the right fit for you, you can test us out with a thirty-day no lock-in contract. Should you not be satisfied with the service, we won’t charge you a cancellation fee, but customers are required to provide a thirty-day notice prior to cancellation. If you have any concerns, our Brisbane-based team is happy to help you with your questions.
