      nbn® FTTC

nbn® FTTC, or Fibre to the Curb, is an internet connection technology that is becoming more and more popular thanks to its speed and reliability. Whether you’re a homeowner, a renter, or a business owner, you could benefit from nbn® FTTC if it’s available at your location.

At Skymesh, we offer a range of internet plans via the nbn® network in select areas of Australia. Some of these plans include nbn® Fixed Line, Fixed Wireless, and Sky Muster® satellite options at affordable prices, depending on your location, proximity to infrastructure, and line of sight.

Read more about nbn® Fibre to the Curb below.

      How does nbn® FTTC work?

nbn® FTTC refers to a type of internet connection that uses optical fibre cables to transmit data from the telephone exchange to a small box on the curb outside your home or business.

With nbn® FTTC, the fibre optic cables run all the way to the curb, so the distance between the fibre optic cable and your premises is much shorter compared to traditional ADSL or cable internet connections. This generally results in faster and more reliable internet speeds.

Once the fibre optic internet cable reaches the curb, a small box called a ‘distribution point unit’ (DPU) is installed. This box connects the cable to your premises using existing copper wiring. The copper wiring can handle the last leg of the connection, which is what allows you to connect to the internet.

Unlike Fibre to the Node (FTTN), a type of fibre technology that runs the fibre optic line up to the street’s node, FTTC typically delivers fibre optic cabling closer to the end-user’s premises.

Nonetheless, Fibre to the Node (FTTN) and Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) are limited by the customer’s copper line capability. The speed and reliability of the service may be affected by the quality and age of the existing copper line.

      Is FTTC better than FTTP?

nbn® FTTC vs FTTP is a common topic of discussion. However, it’s difficult to say whether nbn® FTTC is better than FTTP, as both have their own advantages and disadvantages.

FTTP plans provide a direct connection to the customer’s premises using only fibre optic cabling, without any copper wiring involved. This means that it can typically offer the highest speeds and the most reliable connection with no signal loss or degradation. FTTP is considered the most advanced and future-proof nbn® technology for internet connections, with the ability to support future upgrades and higher speeds.

On the other hand, nbn® FTTC connects the fibre optic cable to your home or business using existing copper wiring. While an nbn® FTTC connection is a faster and more reliable connection than traditional ADSL or cable internet connections, depending on distance and the quality of the copper line, it may not be as fast or reliable as FTTP. Note, however, that other factors also affect your connection, such as network congestion and weather conditions.

nbn® FTTC is generally more cost-effective to be rolled out by nbn® than FTTP as it requires less fibre optic cable to be laid and can use existing copper wiring. For areas with low density or where it is not practical or cost-effective to lay fibre optic cable directly to each premise, this is a more feasible option.

Note that you cannot choose what technology type you can use, as nbn® allocates the ideal connection based on location, proximity to infrastructure, and other factors. Check your address using an internet availability checker at Skymesh to see what technology is available for your home.

How do I choose the best nbn® fibre plan for my home?

Choosing the best internet plan for your home depends on several factors, such as your surfing habits, household size, and online activities. Here are some steps you can follow in choosing the ideal plan for your home when you’re searching for ‘home internet best deals’.

      1. Determine your internet usage needs. Consider how you use the internet, such as streaming video content, playing online games, or uploading and downloading large files.
      2. Consider the number of people in your household. For larger families or homes with roommates, you may need a plan with a higher data allowance and faster speeds to handle multiple users.
      3. Compare nbn® fibre plans. Research and compare nbn® fibre plans available in your area to find the one that suits your needs. Look at factors such as data allowances, speed, and pricing to compare internet plans.
      4. Check for additional features and benefits. Some nbn® fibre plans come with additional features such as home phone bundles, Wi-Fi routers, and free standard installations.*
      5. Read reviews and ratings. Check reviews and ratings from other users to get an idea of the quality and reliability of different nbn® fibre plans and providers.

By following these steps, you can choose the best nbn® plan for your home or business that meets your internet usage needs and budget.
