      FTTP

In today’s digital society, where almost everything can be done online, people want fast and cheap internet plans. Because Fibre to the Premises or FTTP technology typically offers faster and more reliable internet speeds compared to traditional broadband connections such as ADSL or cable, FTTP plans are highly sought after by those looking for high-quality internet services.

When an nbn® Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connection is used, a fibre optic line is installed directly from the nearest available fibre node to your premises. To enable FTTP connections, a Network Termination Device (NTD) must be installed inside your home, which requires a power source to operate. Note that the installation of nbn® equipment can only be done by nbn®-accredited installers.

But even though FTTP is becoming increasingly available, it remains limited to a few areas, mostly large cities and towns. This is where Skymesh can help. As one of the few internet service providers capable of servicing regional Australians, we provide a reliable internet connection to both their homes and workplaces.

We’ve answered common questions about FTTP and Skymesh below to help you make an informed decision about your home WiFi setup.

What are the advantages of using FTTP?

A major advantage of FTTP is its speed, which makes it ideal for heavy internet usage, such as gaming and working. However, just like other types of internet connections, it has a variety of benefits that vary from provider to provider and from location to location.

For instance, Skymesh subscribers who have Fixed Line service coverage can select from three speed tiers:

      • nbn® 25. This tier offers typical evening speeds of up to 25 Mbps download and up to 4 Mbps upload between 7.00 p.m. and 11.00 p.m. It can be used by up to two people and provides fast enough speeds for daily browsing activities like viewing and sending emails.
      • nbn® 50. This tier provides typical evening speeds of up to 49 Mbps download and up to 16 Mbps upload between 7.00 p.m. and 11.00 p.m. It can cater to three- to four-person households that use the internet for online gaming, video streaming, and social media.
      • nbn® 100. This tier delivers typical evening speeds of up to 96 Mbps download and up to 16 Mbps upload between 7.00 p.m. and 11.00 p.m. It is ideal for ultra HD streaming, online gaming, and downloading large files, and it can accommodate households with four or more users.

If you are considering FTTP or a different type of Fixed Line connection for your internet service, it is important to note that availability depends on your premises or current residence. To set your expectations about your internet service limitations, you should check the available options in your area.

The good news is that Skymesh makes it easy for you to do so. There’s no need to look up terms like ‘HFC connection’ or ‘internet availability checker’, as you simply have to navigate our website and enter your address, and you may be able to see if nbn’s service is available for your home. Our agents can also assist you if your address isn’t listed or if you need further assistance.

      How is FTTP installed?

In order to get a Fibre to the Premises connection, two boxes need to be installed: the utility box and the Network Termination Device.

The utility box is mounted on the outside of the property, while the NTD box is mounted inside. In addition, the nbn®-approved technician might also have to dig a small trench if the cable isn’t already connected from the street to the outside of your property to complete the installation.

Fixed Line connections use high-speed fibre optic cables to deliver fast broadband to your premises. However, some Fixed Line connections may use existing copper networks as the final segment of the connection or employ hybrid connections. It’s important to note that the speed and reliability of the service can be influenced by the age and capabilities of the copper network leading into your premises.

Fixed Wireless connections, on the other hand, use radio signals and outdoor antennas to connect your premises to the nbn® network wirelessly. Meanwhile, a Sky Muster® satellite connection uses two advanced satellites in space and a satellite dish mounted on your roof to establish connectivity.

As with many types of internet connections, such as fibre-to-home upgrades, professionals are needed to ensure your new service is installed correctly. Eligible customers may be able to enjoy free standard installations.* However, in some instances, you may have to pay a new developments charge or subsequent installation charge on top of the actual plan itself.

Is FTTP available everywhere in Australia?

Many homes in Australia are eligible for a Fibre to the Premises upgrade, though it still depends on your exact location. While many homes have the option of upgrading to a Fibre to the Premises connection, it can be too expensive to do so. With that, fast nbn® alternatives exist that may be more affordable and even available for those who can’t possibly upgrade to FTTP.

With Skymesh, you can easily verify the service plans available in your location using our platform. We also have a Brisbane-based team ready to answer your queries and concerns. If you require personalised assistance, you may speak with our regional broadband specialist.
