      Fibre To Home

If you want a pure end-to-end fibre connection to enjoy high-bandwidth internet activities, you’re probably curious about getting a Fibre to Home connection. After all, with the expansion of nbn® Australia to more and more areas all over the country, gaining access to fibre optic internet has never been easier.

The reason nbn® is available in more areas is due to a strategy called the Multi-Technology Mix (MTM). MTM was a tactical move to make the most of already-existing network technology and connect more locations to the closest fibre internet node.

How does Fibre to the Home work?

Now, Fibre to Home (or Fibre to the Home; FTTH) is more commonly known as Fibre to the Premises (FTTP). Unlike other connection types, it’s a pure end-to-end fibre internet connection because the optical fibre cable travels all the way to your premises without using legacy technology in the last-mile infrastructure.

Because it’s the purest form of fibre connection, more and more homeowners want a Fibre to Home connection. Unfortunately, the connection type that a household gets access to is not up to preference. Since what nbn® allocates to your property is based on proximity to infrastructure and other potential factors, your location affects the service you can receive.

There are various ways to connect to the nbn® infrastructure other than through Fibre to Home. One option is Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC), which uses a location’s existing coaxial cables (or simply ‘cable’, as it’s more commonly known) to connect to the nbn® network via the nearest fibre node.

But there are more direct ways as well, and they all fall under the ‘Fibre to the x’ umbrella. For instance, with Fibre to the Building (FTTB), network signals would travel to a cabinet in your building’s communications room. From there, it uses the technology already in your building to connect the different rooms to the internet.

Fibre to Node system is abbreviated as FTTN, and it utilises existing copper phone and internet networks as the final part of connecting your home to nbn®. FTTN connections typically offer faster speeds and increased reliability compared to legacy connections, depending on the distance to the node and the quality of the existing copper

Is the monthly cost for FTTH plans worth it?

When it comes to pricing, whether a plan is worth it depends on your unique needs and preferences as a user. Plans are often based on factors such as internet speeds, and the higher your preferred speed, the pricier your monthly rate.

While you cannot control the way your property connects to the nbn® infrastructure, what you can control is the retail service provider (RSP) that provides you with internet access. As a user, you are free to compare internet plans from your chosen RSP and select the one that best suits your needs in terms of price, typical data usage, and preferences.

To ensure that the monthly cost of a Fibre to Home plan is worth it, you’ll need to choose the appropriate speed tier so that you don’t overspend. Here are some factors to consider when choosing your speed tier:

      • How many people will be using the internet in the home or premises? All of the devices in your home will share the internet speed you have available. A lower speed tier would often be sufficient for empty-nesters or small families.
      • What activities will you be doing on the internet? If there is a gamer in the house, they might prefer a faster connection with less lag. The same holds true if you want to watch 4K or 8K video streaming.
      • What is your budget for internet use? Lower speeds usually translate to cheap internet plans. Having said that, expect to pay more for a super-fast connection.

Can pensioners apply for Fibre to the Home plans?

Yes, pensioners and seniors can apply for Fibre to Home plans if the technology is available at their location. As mentioned earlier, if your internet usage is going to be light and casual – think occasional emails and calls – then you should be able to get by with a basic speed tier.

For pensioners who live in regional areas of Australia, we understand how difficult it can be to find a reliable internet service provider. Luckily, your search is over, as we at Skymesh have over twenty years of experience connecting regional Australians to the internet.

We’ve made the process very simple. You may be able to use our website’s internet availability checker to see which internet plans are available at your property. If a certain connection type (e.g. Fibre to Home or another kind) is available, you can order your plan with just a few clicks.

You may also speak to one of our agents for further assistance or if your address isn’t listed. Talk to our friendly Brisbane-based team to discuss plan options and other general questions.

All Fixed Line plans, such as Fibre to Home or Premises, Node, Curb, or Building, are unlimited. You can choose from three speed tiers: nbn® 25, 50, and 100. In the evenings (7.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m.), these plans typically offer download speeds of up to 25, 49, and 96 Mbps, respectively.

Eligible users may also be able to enjoy free standard installations!* However, this does not yet include any additional nbn®-imposed charges.
