VDSL2
If you’re not sure what VDSL2 or ADSL mean for your internet connection, you’re not alone.
There is a wide range of internet options available in highly urbanised areas, ranging from cable internet and dial-up to satellite and broadband. However, regional areas may have fewer options by which to compare internet services, and those unfamiliar with internet terminology may be even more confused by the options that are available to them.
Thankfully, Skymesh may hold the answer to fast and reliable internet for regional locations. As the leading specialised regional internet provider for nbn®, we connect customers via Fixed Line, Fixed Wireless, and next-generation satellite solutions, depending on what’s available in their location.
Now may be the perfect time to switch to a new service provider, so let us break down the details you’ll want to know before diving in with a possible Skymesh connection.
What is VDSL2?
VDSL2 stands for Very high-speed Digital Subscriber Line 2. It’s a newer type of DSL connection that allows for much faster data transfers, which in turn leads to faster internet speeds for this particular type of connection. Many parts of the world utilise VDSL2 services, which are accessible through existing copper phone lines.
Similarly, DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line and is a type of internet service that uses copper telephone lines to establish a connection. Subsequently, ADSL stands for Asymmetric DSL, which allows internet access and phone calls to run simultaneously.
By comparison, Skymesh’s Fixed Line service plans (through the nbn® network) use a mix of different technologies to provide a stable internet connection. The Fixed Line service uses high-speed fibre optic internet cables to provide fast connectivity to your premises.
These include connection types like Fibre to the Building (FTTB), Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), Fibre to the Node (FTTN), Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC). Some of these technologies utilise existing copper networks or hybrid technologies as part of the connection, so the speed and reliability may be affected by the age and quality of these networks.
Skymesh also offers Fixed Wireless plans and Sky Muster® satellite plans. Fixed Wireless connections use radio signals and outdoor antennas to connect your premises to an nbn® network wirelessly. On the other hand, satellite connections use cutting-edge satellites in space and a satellite dish installed on your roof to establish an internet connection.
How does a VDSL2 modem router work?
Before we get into how a VDSL2 modem works, let’s explain what a modem and a router are.
Both a modem and a router connect your devices to the internet, but their specific uses are different. In simple terms, a modem connects your home network (the devices in your home that can access the internet) to your internet service provider (ISP). Meanwhile, a router lets all your home network devices communicate with each other directly over the internet at the same time.
With that in mind, a VDSL2 modem connects your home to your internet service. Some VDSL2 devices work as both a modem and a router, depending on the model.
Because VDSL2 is a DSL-type connection, your internet service may rely on copper telephone lines, which can affect the speed and stability of your signal if the infrastructure has deteriorated over time.
If you’re considering changing your current service to a fast nbn® service, Skymesh can provide a stable and reliable alternative, depending on your location and our service coverage in the area.
Skymesh offers nbn® options such as Fixed Line, Fixed Wireless, and Sky Muster® satellite internet in select regional areas, and we are constantly working on further expanding our coverage. Each service’s availability depends on your location, so we strongly suggest checking with our service locator or customer service team to see if we can offer a service plan in your area.
Are VDSL2 modems compatible with nbn®?
Your VDSL2 modem’s compatibility with the nbn® network depends on the model you prefer or own.
While there are VDSL2 modems that are compatible with the nbn® network, many commonly used models do not meet the full criteria that the nbn® network requires.
If your modem doesn’t meet all the nbn® requirements, you may have trouble connecting to the internet. For example, your internet connection might stop working, your modem might not be able to connect to the nbn® network, or the nbn® network might not accept fault reports from your service until you replace your modem with an nbn®-compatible model.
That being said, you’ll be glad to know that Skymesh’s plug-n-play routers are fully nbn®-compatible. You can purchase one to go with your service plan, and we’ll ship it to you free of charge.
What type of modem router is best for nbn®?
Your modem can affect how fast and reliable your internet connection is, so it’s best to choose one that’s ready for your internet service and, if possible, comes from your internet service provider (ISP).
Depending on your internet needs, you may need a modem with more features and capabilities, such as dual-band technology or a wider Wi-Fi range, especially if you live in a larger household or run a business that heavily utilises an internet connection. In these cases, you may need to get a higher-end modem, depending on what your projected internet usage will be.
When signing up for an internet plan, you can reach out to your retail service provider if your current VDSL2 modem may cause issues with your nbn® setup, especially if you’re interested in any BYO modem nbn® plans.
Discover fast and reliable internet speeds with Skymesh.
Skymesh works hard to connect regional Australia to the rest of the world, and our multi-award-winning plans show how serious we are about this goal.
If you prefer to test out the services available at your location, then Skymesh offers thirty-day no-lock-in plans across services. And if you want to upgrade your current plan, you can easily contact our customer service by phone or by logging on to your Skymesh account and updating your plan there.
Eligible customers may also be able to enjoy free standard installations for nbn® plans.*
That being said, addresses that qualify for a subsequent installation charge or new developments charge will require a one-time nbn®-imposed mandatory fee. The subsequent installation charge covers the additional work and resources for a second line or new nbn® activation alongside an existing copper service.
On the other hand, the new developments charge may be applied to the first nbn® activation at a property or other instances considered to be new developments, such as buildings or properties that require establishing a new address.
When you have fast and reliable internet service, the world becomes your oyster. With Skymesh’s help, you could make the switch from VDSL2 to an nbn® internet connection with little hassle on your part.
