Fixed Wireless Data Speeds
Most Skymesh Fixed Wireless plans are on the fastest and latest nbn® speed tier available.
nbn has provided various users with internet through Fixed Wireless Plus, but given all the upgrades to their Fixed Wireless network over the years, they now sell two new better speed options to retail service providers like us at Skymesh – the Fixed Wireless Home Fast and Fixed Wireless Superfast!
On top of this, nbn has worked on increasing Fixed Wireless speeds during peak usage times, giving you a chance to enjoy your beloved online activities with less buffering.* You can also have a better time using multiple devices at the same time, regardless of whether you’re studying, streaming HD videos or gaming online.
The nbn Fixed Wireless upgrade has also used advanced technology to broaden the scope of the network. This enables around 120,000 properties already using nbn Satellite internet to switch to Fixed Wireless for the first time.
What are the nbn Fixed Wireless Speed tiers like?
Similar to other data network owners, nbn limits the rate at which information can be downloaded and uploaded. For their previous Fixed Wireless Plus speed option, they called this the Potential Maximum Information Rate, and it was up to 75/10 Mbps. Now, especially since this plan has been available throughout 100% of nbn’s Fixed Wireless scope, it has been upgraded to up to 100/20 Mbps.
Additionally, since July 2024, enhanced speed plans have been slowly offered to suitable locations via an expanding network of retail service providers like Skymesh.
With this, nbn Fixed Wireless Home Fast provides peak wholesale download speeds ranging from up to 200 Mbps to 250 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 8 Mbps to 20 Mbps.* Upon the completion of our upgrade initiative, this option will be accessible to about 90% of the areas receiving the Fixed Wireless improvements.*
As for nbn Fixed Wireless Superfast, it delivers peak wholesale download speeds of up to 400 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 10 Mbps to 40 Mbps.* When the upgrade program is complete, this plan will be available to around 80% of the areas with an updated Fixed Wireless service.
Just keep in mind that this potential maximum of any of these nbn Fixed Wireless options doesn’t completely indicate what Data Speed you will typically achieve or the fastest you can hope to expect.
Many factors can impact your Data Speed, including congestion on the nbn network. Until your service is active, there’s typically no way of knowing where your speeds will end up.
As a result, the projections of the Potential Maximum Information Rate for Fixed Wireless Plus, Fixed Wireless Home Fast and Fixed Wireless Superfast are not part of what Skymesh offers.
How do the new nbn upgrades affect experience and performance?
Aside from users enjoying smoother gaming, sharper video calls and quicker upload speeds, the technological improvements make use of more optimal data transmission methods and efficient network pathways. This works to reduce data lag and packet loss, typically bringing better nbn Fixed Wireless latency & performance.
What’s more, in contrast to conventional wired networks, Fixed Wireless eliminates the need for extensive physical cabling from the network, an advantage in areas where laying optical fibre is difficult. That’s because a Fixed Wireless connection relies on radio waves and external antennas to wirelessly link your property to the nbn network.
How do I optimise data speeds after Fixed Wireless installation?
First, you can test the baseline performance you’re getting by running a standard speed test here.
Once that’s done, you can fine-tune your connection settings and then test again after. Remember that overlapping Wi-Fi networks can interfere with each other, potentially slowing down Fixed Wireless data speeds. As such, utilise your router’s configuration options to switch to a Wi-Fi channel that’s less crowded, thereby minimising potential interference from nearby networks.
Tweaking your router’s Quality of Service (QoS) settings can also allocate bandwidth preferentially to essential applications such as gaming and video calls. This adjustment helps ensure these functions have the necessary bandwidth and in the same way, shutting down non-essential applications and devices that hog bandwidth can help your main activities run more efficiently and without disruptions.
Finally, if you want to optimise further, you can experiment with device placement for superior signal reception.
Positioning your router centrally can improve signal reception across all devices, mitigating weak spots and boosting overall network performance. It’s generally good practice to keep the router away from walls, metal items or electronics that might disrupt the signal, such as microwaves and phones. These barriers and devices can significantly weaken the signal, leading to unstable internet connections.
Additionally, if your router is equipped with adjustable antennas, orient them vertically to expand coverage and reduce interference from other electronic devices. The strategic placement of your router is crucial for enhancing signal strength and consistency.
